Book Review: July 8

Early Medieval Art by Lawrence Nees
Published by Oxford University Press in 2002
Part of the Oxford History Of Art series.

Easily understandable, with lots of photos of the art. Early Medieval Art is a well laid out book. It follows the evolution of European and Mediterranean art from the Late Roman period through the end of the first millennium. In the back of the book there is a section of titles for further reading divided by chapter, which is nice, as well as a time-line of events.

The book itself is not large and bulky but about the size of a trade paperback, and not too heavy. Nice when it's a textbook you've got to carry. That is another recommendation in my opinion. This was a textbook for two different Medieval themed courses at University.

The only down-side to the book is the glossy pages. They make it harder to read or make notes on in some lights. On the other hand, with the number of colour plates on most pages, the glossy finish is an asset with those. Can't have it both ways I guess.

ISBN: 0-19-284243-9
